The College of Humanities and Social Sciences provides and supports a number of walk-in computer labs, instructional teaching labs, and technology-enhanced classrooms for use by faculty and students.
Our walk-in labs are open to all NC State undergraduate and graduate students. The labs are equipped with a variety of software packages commonly used in the humanities and social science disciplines including SPSS, STATA, SAS, NVivo, Atlas.ti, ArcGIS, OxygenXML, Austhink Rationale. The labs are also equipped with equipment such as scanners, printers and headsets (in the Laundry Building language labs only).

Equipment Checkout for Instructors

General Lab Policies:
Food and Drinks
Students can have food and drink in the lab, but the items must be covered. Please be sure to clean your workspace before leaving the lab.
Installation of Software
The installation of software is strictly prohibited. We have gone to a lot of trouble to configure these machines and provide our users with as wide an array of software as we can afford. The installation of certain programs can conflict with our own networking software and render the computer unusable by other students. Anyone caught installing outside software will be ejected from the labs, and a permanent ban will be considered.
Where to Save Your Work
We ask that our users save their work to either removable media, such as a USB flash drive, or to your Unity/AFS account space (K: drive). User files are deleted automatically once you log off. If you save anything to the desktop it will be gone the next time you log in!
No alternative paper
Printing is only allowed on white 8.5x11" letter-sized paper; we do not allow our printers to process any alternate types of paper.
Wolfcopy Printers
There are black/white and color Wolfcopy printers in all labs. Both of these printers require print quota. There are no restrictions on what can be printed or the number of copies on these printers, just make sure to have enough print quota.
Foreign Language Placement Tests
Please read below for answers to the most commonly asked questions. If your questions are not answered, please feel free to contact us.
Tests are administered ONLY at the Language Lab located in room 214 of the Language and Computer Labs (Laundry) building. This building is located at the corner of Stinson Drive and Current Drive (2341 STINSON DR).
We offer tests in Chinese, French, German, Latin and Spanish.
You will need to contact the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures to arrange a test. It may be written or verbal.
You may take the test at any time the lab is open. Please refer here for hours of operation. Keep in mind that the lab is only open when classes are in session.
The test is free.
You may take only ONE test per language. No matter the length of time, students are only allowed to take one test for each language. However, you are allowed to take more than one test as long as it is for a different language (ie. You can take a Spanish and French test, but are not allowed to take two Spanish tests).
Please bring a photo ID (preferably your student ID) and your nine-digit student ID number.
The test usually takes between 20-30 minutes, but varies for each test taker. Once the test is started, you have to finish it. Please plan to stay for around 45 minutes to 1 hour. There is no time limit.
You will receive a printout of your scores and your course placement immediately after completing the placement test.
You will need to keep your printout and take it with you on the first day of your foreign language class.
The test is multiple-choice reading comprehension. It focuses on verbal, grammar, and reading skills. There are no oral or auditory components to the test.
You may request a re-print of your score in person at our lab. Please bring a photo ID (preferably your student ID) and your nine-digit student ID number. Be sure to confirm the lab is open on the date you want to take the exam.
